Last night I felt a little off, like I had a temperature. Sure enough, the thermometer showed a low-grade fever. Since I’m supposed to call the doctor if it’s above 100.1, and I’m a rule follower, we placed a call to the on call doctor at the Women’s Cancer Clinic. I also took a rapid test, which was negative. The first time I took my temperature, it was 100.4. When I did it a second time to confirm the result, it was 100.3.
After waiting a while, the doctor called. She assessed the situation and then wanted to look at my chart and labs. When done, she said she wasn’t too worried because I didn’t have any other symptoms. I took my temperature again, which was lower, but I had just brushed my teeth. She said to just take Tylenol and listed symptoms to be concerned about.
Thankfully, this morning, my temperature was normal!
In other news, a friend my age texted me today that she got her first mammogram because of me. “I wanted to thank you for being so open with your story,” she wrote. “Your words made an impact on me, and I’m glad I finally did it.”
If you haven’t had a mammogram yet, I recommend not scheduling it near your period, and taking ibuprofen beforehand. Be prepared as it’s not just an x-ray – your boobs will get squished. It might hurt, but it’ll be fast!
Taking charge of your health and being proactive = priceless.

Glad your fever is gone!
I know this isn’t the role you wanted or needed, but leave it to you to turn this crummy experience into a way to educate others. Your openness and sharp writing have given me — along with your friends, family, followers, and fans — vital and pragmatic information in caring for ourselves and others. xoxo
